My process in the Dialogue paintings begins with an openness to what wants to emerge rather than a predetermined visual outcome. I approach the page as a site of encounter, allowing colour, gesture, and symbolic form to converse with one another in an unfolding, intuitive sequence. Each layer is laid down in response to the previous mark, creating a dialogic rhythm that mirrors the psychological movement between conscious intention and unconscious material. This method is informed by my research in Jungian and post-Jungian depth psychology, where images are understood as living presences rather than fixed representations. I often begin with loose, fluid gestures that invite ambiguity, then refine or obscure them to create tension, resonance, or resolution within the composition. Throughout, I move between immersion and reflection—stepping back to “listen” to the painting, then re-entering the work to develop the next response. The resulting paintings hold traces of this layered conversation, capturing the dynamic interplay between inner experience, mythic symbolism, and painterly exploration.
